Deltec International Group, The Bahamas - Storytelling and Leadership

Jean Chalopin

According to a recent survey from Gallup, a mere 15% of employees strongly agreed that the leadership of their organization makes them feel enthusiastic about the future.

As a leader, executive, team leader or anyone in a position of working with others, how can you address this and make sure you are inspiring others?

With the concept of story-telling, businesses are able to build confidence and create trust by connecting and positively influencing people, staff, and your all-important present and future potential customer base.

Trust and Connection

Through trust and connection, storytelling connects people and builds trust. Although connection and trust are abstract and non-physical experiences, they ultimately pack a huge punch and can positively impact everyone around you. This type of leadership results in more decisive action and positive decision making.

In this article, we are going to introduce the concept of storytelling to enhance leadership skills and how designing compelling stories which evoke emotional responses and can really move people into action.

Why Storytelling Builds Great Leaders

Although Storytelling can simply appear as a gimmick or just the latest marketing buzzword, it has the power to fundamentally alter how people view you, how they react to you, your team and your product or service. Storytelling is how you can efficiently market both yourself and your business with realism and integrity.

You may be thinking ‘am I creative enough to be a storyteller!’ Or ‘do I need any special skills?’ Read on to find out.

Can Anyone Be a Storyteller?

‘From explaining your favorite book as a child to your everyday discussions with colleagues or friends around a powerful story you have read in the newspapers or seen on the T.V, right through to explaining your day to loved ones and family, everyone has the natural ability to be a persuasive and motivational storyteller.’

Great stories really help us engage with our environment and they can encourage us to:

  • Think
  • Feel
  • Positively change outcomes and behaviors

‘Compelling stories simply happen to those that tell them.’

What Happens When I am Storytelling?

According to Jean Chalopin, an entrepreneur and investor at Deltec International group, “When we are storytelling both ourselves and those around us who we engage with, we experience a range of meaningful and moving experiences that has the result of creating inspiring action.”

  • Endorphins increase – When we communicate or simply tell a story, we experience many emotions. We supercharge our neurological wiring and great a wave of endorphins.
  • We create a sense of purpose – Storytelling helps us to find a sense of purpose and also personal meaning by connecting both our emotional and rational mindsets, we are on a journey that others will feel compelled to be a part of.
  • We encourage increased commitment – By weaving storytelling into our daily dealings with staff and customers, we can build empathy, commitment, and trust.
  • Shape our identity – When we hear and retell stories, we help to shape our own identity and others around us. Using a collective belief we can continue to build and shape existing and future norms and also affirm and create new ideas. This helps us keep stories alive and maintain momentum.

So Finally,

We hope you have enjoyed this overview of how leadership storytelling can benefit your business.
