Bridgeway Care and Rehabilitation at Bridgewater Ranked #1 in New Jersey by Newsweek

Bridgewater, NJ – Newsweek has partnered with the worldwide data research firm Statista, Inc. to determine a ranking of Best Nursing Homes for 2020. In New Jersey, Bridgeway Care and Rehabilitation at Bridgewater came in first place. The rankings are based on several criteria. Here are just some of the factors that went into the decision-making process and how Bridgeway won the top spot:

  1. The nursing homes that were considered had to have at least 150 beds, and they couldn’t be chains. Bridgeway’s facility in Bridgewater houses 151 beds. They have been family-owned and operated since 1981 by three generations of the Pelligrino and Rivera-Dugenio families.

  2. Outstanding reputation was key. 46,000 medical experts consisting of managers/administrators, registered nurses, LPN, PVN, and nursing assistants, and therapists and physicians were invited to participate in an online survey. In cooperation with Newsweek, Statista made sure that they didn’t count surveys from a particular nursing home’s workers.

Bridgeway Care and Rehabilitation has been known for quality nursing care as well as the home-like family atmosphere since inception. Founder Dr. Rebecca Rivera, a well-known and respected obstetrician/gynecologist had been in charge of staffing from the onset of Bridgeway, and her children and grandchildren have been carrying on her legacy.

  1. Health inspections had to be consistently stellar. All nursing homes that were considered accept Medicare and Medicaid and are subject to meeting state and federal health regulations. These regulations include, among other things, cleanliness, food safety, overall safety and emergency procedures and facility/equipment maintenance. Health inspections by state officials are purposely unannounced.

Bridgeway’s Bridgewater Facility is rated 5-stars by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This means Bridgeway Care and Rehabilitation received few if any deficiency marks and got high scores in all their inspections.

  1. There had to be a high number of staff members per resident. Statista calculated the number of registered nurse hours per patient and the number of overall staff hours per patient.

Bridgeway scored high in this regard, maintaining at least 1 staff member per 5 residents and at least 1.2 registered nurse hours per resident per day.

  1. Overall quality of both long and short term resident care was a big consideration. The data for quality of care was taken from the national database Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments. These assessments measure a resident’s health, physical functioning, mental status, and general well-being.

Statistics derived from Medicare claims were also used in determining overall quality of care.

In the long-stay rating, many factors were considered such as:

  • the number of hospitalizations and outpatient emergency department visits per 1000 resident days

  • percentage of residents whose need for help with daily activities increased

  • percentage of residents whose ability to move independently worsened

In the short-stay rating, criteria was based in part on:

  • percentage of residents who were re-hospitalized after a nursing home admission

  • percentage of residents who made improvement to function

  • percentage of residents who self-report moderate to severe pain

Bridgeway received the highest marks in New Jersey for quality of care in both long and short term stay programs.
