Detroit, Michigan – June 14, 2021 – Many people have heard of the word “Dyslexia”, but few understand what it means. Dyslexia, also known as a reading disorder, is characterized by trouble with reading despite normal intelligence. Problems may include difficulties in spelling words, “sounding out” words in the head, pronouncing words when reading aloud and understanding what one reads.

Jeannette Washington, M.Ed., is a Speech Pathologist and Software Engineer. These two experiences are summoned in her debut book. “Technical Difficulties: Why Dyslexic Narratives Matter In Tech”. Jeannette owns Bearly Articulating, where she ignites dialogue across multiple dimensions of diversity in the technology industry.

As Camila Fowler, an Early Education teacher, puts it, “This book is an easy read. It encourages those with dyslexia to believe in their abilities and not to listen to the negativity that is connected to dyslexia. This book is an encouragement for everyone struggling with some form of a disability to be an overcomer.”

  • It offers insight into ways employers can be more inclusive in the hiring process.
  • It addresses common themes like disability, equal rights access, and corporate social responsibility.
  • It provides short, thought provoking stories in each chapter.
  • It Includes helpful diagrams and visual representations.

Jeanette’s book covers many points of discussion in exploring the Dyslexic Narrative:

  • “Hello, World!”: Fourth Industrial Revolution, Accessibility, and the Digital Divide
  • Dyslexia At First Sight: Orton-Gillingham Approach, Employment, Multi-sensory Instruction, Discrimination, Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, Tokenism, and Self-Advocacy
  • Decoding Biases: ADHD, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia, Biases, Disability, Brain Dominance Theory, Mental Health, Auditory Processing Disorders, and Visual Processing Disorders.
  • Don’t Dys My Ability: Legal Practices and Laws, Legislation, Accommodations, and Impostor Syndrome.

Reader Testimonials tell the story. Take a look at what Dr. Lauren McClenney-Rosenstein, an instructional coach, had to say, “As an educator who has directly worked with students with dyslexia, I enjoyed this read. It is quick but informative, detailed, and understandable. This is a great resource to those folks out there who really want to understand how to support their employees in the workplace.
